Review of Chromium
Chromium is browser software. My primary browser is Firefox
which I have used for years, and is already open source software, so in order
to satisfy the “browser” specification of the assignment I chose to download
the Chromium browser.
When I attempted to download Chromium from the site, the
page displayed the following disclaimer;
“this is a raw build of Chromium for
Mac, right off the trunk. It may be tremendously buggy.”
This was an accurate
disclaimer because it crashed several times, which confirms that Chromium is
unstable.
After
Chromium was installed, I had to sign in. In order to sign in, it required my
Google account password. Chromium didn’t appear to accept it, so I had to reset my
password. That caused my Google synchronization with other accounts such as my
Google calendar and iPhone Google access to have to be reset too, among other
accounts, which was inconvenient. However, Chromium finally accepted my
password, since all my bookmarks transferred into Chromium from Firefox.
Overall,
Chromium appears to work faster than Firefox.
Of note, I have Firefox set up to
open a set of web pages when I launch it. I was able to set up the pages the
same in Chromium (this is important to me).
The interface is slightly different
from Firefox, but works basically the same, except that it is “buggy” and unstable, just like the disclaimer said. Chromium kept crashing repeatedly.
This blog is part of an assignment from American Military
University for my "Web 2.0 Fundamentals" class where I am to download
three different open source software’s and review/compare them with commonly
used comparable software.
