Thanksgiving memories / photos

Below are some Thanksgiving photos I dug up from the vaults from the past 20-ish years taken either on or near Thanksgiving.
It displays an assortment of years, people and places to include Dallas, TX; Hillsboro, TX; LaCanada, CA and most recently Fontana, CA.
Much has happened over the years.
Among those memories, 2000 is the last year we had Thanksgiving with Dad, who passed away 2 weeks later.
2014 is the last year Mom had Thanksgiving with the family, since she moved into assisted living in 2015, then passed away in 2018.
Vicki is shown in 2011 and 2012, who also passed away in 2017.
On the bright side, the kids grew up!
Personally, I am thankful that I am retired from the USN, for my wife, cats, a roof over my head, food to eat, the ability to travel, my health and especially my family!
The 2018 Thanksgiving group is the biggest Thanksgiving in years! Some family traveled from Texas to  gather at Katy and Andrews new house they bought in April 2018 in Fontana, CA.
It always great to see everyone! May these Thanksgiving memories and gatherings continue!
I appreciate and love them all!

Thanksgiving Memories 1990 - 2009

What I did on every Thanksgiving, since I joined the Navy in 1990.

1990: Was in boot camp, Orlando, Florida. Graduated on December 7, so we were a senior company at the time, K004. I remember eating Thanksgiving dinner in the galley.

1991: Was in San Diego. Was mess cranking on the USS Cape Cod, but had the day off. Went rollerblading at Mission Beach board walk that day. Called mom from a pay phone at the beach.

1992: Was in San Diego. Went out to Flame the night before and got trashed. Was with Karin at the time... sort of. She made Thanksgiving dinner for me, but I was so hung over I was sick.

1993: Lived with Angie and Mandy when we lived out in BFE on 69th street in San Diego. Mandy had just had knee surgery and was on strong pain meds that made her crazy. I remember Thanksgiving dinner in the living room, then watching Dallas piss away the game to Miami in the snow. Mandy was also a Dallas fan. Unfortunately, she was killed by a drunk driver in 2004.

1994: Was deployed on the USS Cape Cod to the middle east. Vaguely remember Thanksgiving dinner on the mess decks with the crowd I hung out with. Was with Nona at the time.

1995: Hawaii... had only been there a couple of months at the time. Had Thanksgiving dinner at CTA1 Griffiths house in military housing, not far from where I lived in Salt Lake.

1996: Hawaii... had Thanksgiving dinner with Dee and some friends in Mililani that I met thru LSG. The house they lived in had a pool. Dee was an adamant Chicago Bulls fans.

1997: Hawaii... had Thanksgiving dinner with Nancy, Casey, Dawn, Andrew and his gf at Nancys house. I got stupid drunk on wine partly because I was pissed at Lynne. Had to work briefly the next day and sort mail. Was a memorable Thanksgiving, but not the day after.

1998: Had just reported to the USS Theodore Roosevelt in Norfolk, VA. We were in-port St Maarten. Since I had just gotten to the ship, I wasn't in a duty section yet and had 5 days off in that port. I had Thanksgiving dinner of hot dogs at a sports bar with Penny Price on the beach. I thought it was a blast, but she was bumming because she missed her family. I remember walking around town with her in Philipsburg.

1999: Was in Norfolk, VA. Had Thanksgiving dinner with Heidi and her friends. Played "You Don't know Jack" on the computer that day and got hooked on it.

2000: Was the last Thanksgiving with my dad. The whole family was in Texas together for that one. Seems like we had Thanksgiving dinner at The Black Eyed Pea. I have a pic of all of us together in the living room (below). He was sitting by my nephew John, who was 10 years old at the time and squirming. Dad was pissed about that and it shows on his face. Good Thanksgiving... ended up being a farewell to dad as he passed away 2 weeks later on December 9.

2001: Was deployed on the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the middle east. Remember having Thanksgiving dinner in the First Class Mess.. was a good meal. Us print shop folks printed up the Thanksgiving menu for that and the Christmas meal that year.

2002: First Thanksgiving as a CPO. Was transferred off the TR and was at Ft Belvior, VA in "LI" "C" school. Had the 4 day Thanksgiving weekend off and was staying in the barracks on base. Watched football all day and ordered a Dominoes pizza for Thanksgiving dinner. Went sight seeing in DC the rest of the weekend.

2003: Back in San Diego. Went to Texas for Thanksgiving that year. Had Thanksgiving dinner with Mom and Shirley, Don, Amber and Brent at Shirley's house with 20 cats. Kept up with Tina on the phone, who drove to Vegas to be with her mom.

2004: San Diego. With Liz. Her parents, GB and Marvin went to San Francisco and we house sat for them. Liz ordered a pre cooked "Ralphs" meal. Amy and Cyndee came over too. Watched Dallas beat up on Chicago Bears that day and I slept thru most of the game. Julius Jones was the star of the game who Dallas later traded away.

2005: Went to see mom in Texas that year. I think we had Thanksgiving dinner at Golden Coral. Either that or with Shirley... not sure. Seems like that is the year Dallas lost to Denver. Was in DFW airport a couple of days later on the way back to San Diego. Was sitting in a Dallas Cowboys sports bar waiting on my flight, when someone walked in the bar with a Denver Bronco sweat shirt on. Everyone in the bar who saw it groaned.

2006: Liz and I went to Chad and Jems for Thanksgiving dinner. Of course, I watched football. Chad is a kick ass cook, so it was a great meal. Jem had a DVD set of "Bewitched" that we watched several episodes of. Noticed a kid who looked just like Jerry Mathers who made an appearance on one of the shows. We did the math and figured out that it couldn't possibly be "the Beaver". (Mathers would have been a grown man at the time). Chad Googled it and found that it was Jerry Mathers younger brother, who was the spitting image of Jerry. Also learned Jerry Mathers tried to join the Marines after he grew up, but was turned away due to his celebrity status.

2007: Liz ordered another "Ralphs" pre-cooked meal. We had Shannon and Kim Smith over. Shannon chased around and played with Xavier all day, and played her "Guitar Hero" PlayStation game on our outside patio TV.

2008: GB and Marvin came over for Thanksgiving dinner. Martha made an appearance too. Another "Ralphs" pre-cooked meal. GB and Marvin fell asleep on the couch after we ate. We all played Nintendo Wii bowling and golf that night.

2009: I was recovering from a miserable cold and laryngitis and Liz from recent abdominoplasty surgery.... thought of going up to CD's in LA but not able. Ricky and Michael came down from Long Beach for the day. Dallas beat up on Oakland. We all played bowling on Nintendo Wii that night and watched Ricky's new movie "Heels", soon to be released.

POST NAVY:
2010. Freshly retired from the Navy. Life is good.  :)
The week of Thanksgiving was busy with getting the patio deck and fence painted and finished up for Thanksgiving guests. Got it finished up Wednesday night with the help of Tim, a friend of Martha from her church. He also installed a new light panel in the garage.
Thanksgiving day: Ricky and Michael came down again from Long beach for the day. Georgine and Marvin came over also as they were originally supposed to go up to San Fransisco, but had to cancel due to moving. (Courtney and Viann flew to Texas this year to be with Elizabeth, John and mom.)
So we had a house full. Day after Thanksgiving, we went on our "post Thanksgiving day bike ride". Rode up Adams Ave to the bike shop and down Fairmount Ave to one of the San Diego libraries to get movies. Saturday, we decorated the house for Christmas and Sunday, I watched football.
