My Super Bowl memories since 1990

1990 - 2010 originally posted on Facebook in January 2010.
Supplemental edits at the bottom after 2011.

What I remember about each Super Bowl since I joined the Navy in 1990.

1991: (following 1990 season) Super Bowl XXV. Was in "A" school at Ft Belvior, VA. Went the the base rec center to watch the game. They had snacks.

1992: Was at Laura's house. Was pretty trashed at this party and remember very little of it.

1993: Was on first deployment and just pulling out of Guam at the time the game came on, which was on Monday morning there. We could hear it on Armed Forces radio, until we got out of range. Dallas vs Buffalo. I found out later Dallas won.

1994: Was living with Mandy and Angie. Cris Pedraza came over and it was Nona, me, Mandy, Angie and Cris. Another game between Dallas and Buffalo. We agreed that whoevers team made a touchdown would sit on the couch. The opposite fans would sit on the floor. Angie sat on the floor almost the entire game, while the rest of us got the couch. :)

1995: Deployed again. This time on my second deployment. Was inport Jebel Ali this time. The game came on at 3 am where I was. Got trashed on apple cider at the Seamans club the night before. Still intended to get up and watch the game, but didn't make it. Was the year 49's crushed the Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX.

1996: My favorite! Dallas vs Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX. Was stationed in Hawaii at the time. One of the girls from the LSG hosted a small party at her place. She lived right by the Ala Wei canal.... nice views. Only 4 or 5 of us were there and I was the only football fan. Was a great game!

1997: Still in Hawaii. Sue Reardon hosted this party and she lived off of the Pali Hwy. Was a big crowd. A Green Bay victory. Brett Favre's only Super Bowl ring.

1998: Hawaii still. Went to a friend of Megan's house in a hard to find area in Honolulu, near Punchbowl. Limited crowd at this one... maybe 10 of us. Denver won.

1999: In Norfolk, VA on the USS TR this time. Super Bowl was played the day before we went underway for 30 days and I had duty on Super Bowl Sunday. It was freezing in the print shop. I wrapped myself in a blanket and watched the game from our "back room". Another Denver victory. John Elway knew when to quit and retired after this one. Still one of the greatest QB's ever.

2000: Deployed on TR in the gulf for this one. Came on at like 3 am. Watched the game on the big screen set up in the hangar bay. This was when Kurt Warner and the Rams won because Tennessee was inches from the goal line when time expired.

2001: Still in Norfolk. At home this time. NY Giants and Baltimore Ravens. Watched the game on my own at home. Was on the phone with Diana nearly the entire game, watching it "together". Baltimore was one of the rare wild card teams to make it to playoffs AND win the Super Bowl. They ran all over NY.

2002: Deployed again right after the 9-1-1 incident. Watched the game in the TR hanger bay. Tom Bradys first Super Bowl win with the Patriots. Threw puffy toy footballs around and drank "near beer." The start of New Englands dynasty.

2003: Deployed on the BHR this time in January 2003. Watched the game in the CPO mess. Tampa Bay dominated. Oakland didn't show up.

2004: Was back in San Diego this year. Amy came over and we watched it at my place. I had just found her after several years of losing touch with her. This is the year Janet Jackson had the wardrobe malfunction. Liz winked at me thru Yahoo personals that day. The rest is history. ;)

2005: San Diego. Liz and I hosted the Super Bowl party. I won the 4th quarter on Bernadette's football pot. Got stupid drunk. Hung over like a little bitch the next day. Fortunately, planned ahead and took the Monday off.

2006: Deployed on RR this time. Watched the game in the CPO mess. Pittsburgh, blah blah blah.

2007: Went to Erin's house in south Chula Vista. Nice big house. Rode her sons skateboard at half time. Had just started school at NDACS so I wasn't drinking as part of the NDACS challenge. Good game. Peyton Mannning's only Super Bowl ring. (so far)

2008: San Diego. Went to Kim and Tracy's house in South park. Plenty of treats, loved the cupcakes. My ankle was black from spraining it a few days earlier. One of the best Super Bowls ever... as New England's undefeated season ended in the final minute of the game. NY Giants victorious. 1972 Dolphins breathe a sigh of relief. A great game!

2009: San Diego. At Kim and Tracy's again in their giant new house this year. More football cupcakes for me. :) Arizona fans in one room, Pittsburgh fans in another. Hell of a game. Probably the best game in Super Bowl history as Arizona nearly pulled off the win, being underdogs in every playoff game leading up to the Super Bowl.

2010: Just stayed at home with a few friends. Watched New Orleans knock off Indy for the Saints first Super Bowl appearance. Was worried about Meishka (kitty) because he was coming down with an eye infection. (turned out, he had an eye ulcer that took about 6 weeks to heal!)

2011: Looking forward to this one! Super Bowl XLV in Cowboys stadium in DALLAS!
My first SB being retired from the Navy!!!

Supplemental, January 20, 2020: After retired from the USN.

Per the 2011 post, The Dallas Cowboys have still not appeared in a Super Bowl as of the 2019 season.

2011 (2010 season):  Packers / Steelers, XLV. Packers won. Hosted a party. I don't have clear memories of this game or party. lol

2012 (2011 season): Giants / Patriots, XLVI. Hosted a party. Giants won. Giants second SB victory over Pats since 2007 season. Close game, Giants won on final play methinks.

2013 (2012 season): Ravens / 49ers, XLVII. Hosted a party. Watched as 49er's lost to Ravens by a "non holding call" on final play. Caused me to lose my football Super Bowl bracket/pool. Colin Kaepernicks last SB appearance.

2014 (2013 season): Seahawks / Broncos, XLVIII. Hosted a party. This game was a Seahawk blowout from the beginning. Peyton Manning fumbled the ball on the first play of the game, which turned into a Seahawk TD. Denver never showed up for this one.

2015 (2014 season): Seahawks / Patriots, XLVIX. Hosted a party. Seahawks lost this one to Patriots because of a bad play call on the final play. Russel Wilson was intercepted on a pass play at the goal line when it should have been a running play.

2016 (2015 season): Broncos / Panthers, 50 (XL). Hosted a party. Denver won. Cam Newton acted like a child after this Panther loss. Peyton Mannings last SB appearance. We waited until after this game to cut cable.

2017 (2016 season): Patriots / Falcons, LI. Hosted a party and had a house full. Patriots won, but another fluke, lucky win in overtime this time. Atlanta had a big lead, then choked. I won much $$ on my Super Bowl pool, in part because of the overtime. This was just after Trump took office and tensions rose at the party, when it was mentioned that Tom Brady is a Trump supporter. We had cut cable by this time. Watched game on antenna (Fox).

2018 (2017 season): Eagles / Patriots, LII. Went to SB party at the Chandlers. Great Philly win! Nick Foles was MVP as a backup QB, (then later traded). I brought Texas hash to the party. Everyone loved it! KC's parents were there visiting from out of town. This was JC's last Super Bowl. :(

2019 (2018 season): Patriots / Rams, LIII. Went to SB party at K Chandlers house. Great party, but lame game. KC's TV kept cutting out. When it did I would yell "drank" and have a shot. Patriots won 13 -3 in this low scoring snoozer. Brady's 6th ring. Meh, retire already. Most boring Super Bowl game in recent history.

2020 (2019 season): 49ers / Chiefs, LIV. SB party at K Chandlers house. Great party, great game! KC made a comeback win to go with all their comeback wins in each game in the playoffs! I brought Texas hash to the party. KC's parents were there visiting from out of town. This was KC's first Super Bowl victory since Super Bowl IV in 1970, but who remembers that? KC QB Patrick Mahomes got MVP.

Edit, February 13, 2022:

2021 (2020 season): COVID-19 is rampant. We stayed home and had only Kirsten C and Lisa B over.
It was fun! KC's team, the Chiefs were in it, but they lost. Oh well.

2022 (2021 season): COVID still requires we be cautious. We stayed home again, and only had Lisa and Stephanie over. Food and fun!

Future years to be continued.....

January 1994, Super Bowl XXVIII. Mandy and  Chris.
Cowboys vs Bills, Cowboys won.

February 1, 2015; Super Bowl XLVIX. I gave Kristi my Russell Wilson shirt.
Patriots vs Seahawks. Patriots won.

February 7, 2016; Super Bowl XL. Everybody crowded into our living room for the game!
Broncos vs Panthers. Broncos won.

An always appropriate meme.
